Subfloors are the foundation of your floor covering. Having a solid subfloor can determine the lifespan of your hardwood floor. Subfloors mainly consist of plywood or concrete. Plywood is the best subfloor for hardwood flooring. Plywood subfloor should be clean, flat, dry, stable, free of squeaks prior to installation.
Concrete subfloors are ideal for engineered and laminate flooring materials. In some cases, solid wood, like strand woven bamboo, can also work well on concrete subfloors. Installation methods include floating, glue down, or click systems. For the best results, concrete subfloors should be flat, clean, level, and dry prior to installation.
Avoid Warping & Gaps
Improper acclimation can cause the floor to buckle, warp, shrink, or have excessive gaps after installation. Acclimation times will vary depending on product and species. In general, a minimum of 3 days is a good start for acclimation. Exotic tropical wood like Brazilian Teak will require a longer time to acclimate due to high density, oil and resin content from the wood. Acclimating wood floors in the garage or outside patio are not recommended.
Most manufacturers use a 6-9% range for equilibrium moisture content (EMC). If wood is not within (EMC) range prior to installation, wood flooring can expand or contract in the near future. Wood flooring needs to be within a certain range of moisture content with the wood subfloor to ensure the longevity of the flooring after it is installed.
During installation, indoor humidity should be between 30-50% and temperature should be between 60-80 degree Fahrenheit for wood flooring to perform at its best.
